Identity theft and how you can avoid it
Identity theft is one the most common types of fraud these days because it is easy to forge someone’s signature and other personal information. There are, however, ways to keep you safe from such problems.
Most identity theft occurs when the stealer wants to profit financially from his actions. This causes more than 70 million dollars in losses each year in the United States alone. Most of these are never recovered and people are usually left to pay the debt on their own.
If the money issue is not enough, there are people using a different name for murders, bank jobs and other severe criminal acts. In general, identity theft can be used for a lot of types of criminal activity and it usually happens over the internet, because it is much easier to use someone else’s identity.
You are probably wondering how people get to your personal information. Well, on the internet it is rather simple. Most of the hackers use scam sites that look very similar or identical to the one that your bank uses. You input there all of your information and they have it on tap. This is rather simple to avoid. All you need to do is make sure that you check with your bank whenever you get an email stating that they need your personal information. Give them a call and ask them about your account, they will tell you what to do.
However, the other part of identity theft takes place in real life. Statistics show that most identity theft takes place at work. You get some personal documents and files, you read them, and you throw them directly into the trash. Someone comes a long to take the trash out and some other person speculates and manages to find your documents intact with most of your personal information. From here on they can use this information to get loans, to write bouncy checks and so on. You can actually get in a lot of trouble because of this, so you should really be careful about what you throw in the garbage can at work. This information is based on actual data gathered from people that have been caught after using someone else’s identity. They are actually really proud of the fact that you were careless enough to throw personal information documents in the garbage can.
The solution is rather simple. You can either take those documents home and store in a secure place or you can destroy them forever by shredding them. Shredding renders the documents un-readable and is the safest and most secure way to protect your identity.
